Taking care of your cashmere garments is a simple yet essential practice to ensure their longevity and preserve their softness and beauty. In this guide, we’ll provide you with easy-to-follow instructions and essential tips on washing, drying, storing and caring for your cashmere with precision and care.

1. Washing

To properly care for your garment, hand wash it using the following steps: Start by turning the garment inside out to protect its surface. Then, soak it for 5 minutes in cool water mixed with either baby shampoo or a low-alkaline detergent, ensuring the detergent is fully dissolved before gently agitating the garment. Rinse thoroughly in cool water until the water runs clear, and then squeeze gently without twisting or wringing.

2. Drying

After washing, always lay your cashmere garment flat to dry. Avoid hanging or tumble drying, as this can cause stretching and distortion. Place the garment on a flat surface with a towel underneath to absorb excess moisture, being careful not to stretch it, avoiding direct heat or sunlight to preserve its quality and color vibrancy.

3. Ironing & Steaming

You can safely iron your cashmere garments using a low temperature setting (maximum 150°C). Alternatively, steaming is another effective way to remove wrinkles and refresh your cashmere without risking damage.

4. Storage

To preserve the shape and quality of your cashmere, avoid hanging it up for storage. Instead, fold the garments and store them in a drawer or storage box. Use cedar balls or lavender sachets to repel moths, and replace them each season to maintain their effectiveness. Additionally, loop cedar balls around your hangers to further deter moths.

5. Pilling & Repairing Cashmere

The fuzzy little balls that take form are a natural occurrence. Referred to as “pilling”, they are not indicative to bad quality – it is an inevitable consequence of the delicate processing of fine cashmere.

6. De-Pilling Cashmere

Take a razor, electric de-bobbler or cashmere comb to the sweater. By removing the pills in this way, as opposed to pulling them off, the sweater will actually soften even more.

If cared for properly, your cashmere will maintain its original luxurious quality.

7. Repairing Holes in a Cashmere Sweater

Whether it has occurred due to a moth or a snag, holes in cashmere can be repaired. If the hole was created by a moth infestation, make sure you freeze first. You can then send it to specialist.
